ISF President, Laurent Petrynka together with his colleague, Roman Greba, ISF Executive Committee member, in celebrating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace of the United Nations for the year 2022, are underlining that Education through Sport is essential to the construction of a culture of peace made of the Olympic values of friendship, understanding, inclusion and fair play.
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), which takes place annually on 6 April, presents an opportunity to recognise the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe. Sport has the power to change the world; it is a fundamental right and a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development and peace, as well as solidarity and respect for all.
To raise awareness of this potential, 6 April was declared as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) by the UN General Assembly. The adoption of this Day signifies the increasing recognition by the UN of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development.
For ISF, supporting the Ukrainian teams in attending ISF events in the year 2022 and especially for the ISF Gymnasiade Normandy 2022 is a crucial message of peace to the youth of the world. ISF is in line with the United Nations when stating that “sport can contribute to securing a sustainable and peaceful future for all” and is supporting @peaceandsport 's initiative of the white card.
