From January 2017 to March 2018, 24 young volunteers from 6 different countries have participated in the project “Volunteering in Schools Sport” (V2S) supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. Their journey was punctuated by life-changing encounters, intercultural learning experiences and many activities aiming at promoting volunteering and youth’s participation in school sport. A Handbook, drawing from this project’s experience, has been published by the ISF to inspire and help other national school sport organisations to (re)invest in volunteering!
The V2S project aimed at supporting 24 young volunteers in becoming young leaders in the world of school sport through training, implementation, and evaluation activities. They were able to get involved at the local, national, and European levels, while developing key competences such as communication, cultural awareness, leadership, and team cooperation. A “Youth Pass” certificate was delivered to recognise their evolution and encourage them in reinvesting such skills in their academic and professional career.
Enriched from their constructive feedbacks, the ISF and the V2S partners decided to publish a “Hanbooklet” on volunteering in school sport. This document is accessible online, and can be translated into the national languages, to support innovative initiatives within the world of school sport.
It was co-written by Laszlo Foldi (V2S chief training) and Édouard Portefaix (V2S French facilitator) greatly based on their expertise acquired during the V2S project. The handbook proposes definitions, guidelines, and good practices to develop voluntary programmes. It also identifies the key competences developed through sport, therefore referring to the Education Through Sport methodology (ETS) used throughout the V2S project. Illustrated with young volunteers’ testimonies (as well as their parents’, and other stakeholders involved), it is a valuable tool for physical education teachers, coaches, and any school sport event organisers willing to invest in, or increase, youth participation in a safe and inclusive environment.
This pilot project, and its dissemination, contributes to the implementation of the ISF “2030 Vision”, which objective is to develop school sport practices and youth participation worldwide. The ISF would be delighted to discuss this further and hear about your own project to promote volunteering: do not hesitate to get in touch with the ISF office to share your initiatives!
